Emma has a couple of kitchen cabinets whose door knobs bang into other things when open, so she send me a picture of these little door knob covers that she found on Amazon, which were crocheted, and asked if I could make something like that. Challenge accepted!
My initial thought was to start with a magic circle and work out, and then she could just snug up the magic circle around the knob and tighten it, but I realized then I couldn’t crochet the stitches close enough together. So I engineered it from the center out instead, much as I’ve done for little crochet bags/pouches I’ve made.
I made a slip knot, then I chained two stitches, and then I SC twice into the first chain, and then proceeded to work around in a circle (effectively working another 2 SC in the other side of that first stitch in order to get a circle going), doing 2 SC in each stitch for the first couple of rounds, then (2 SC, 1 SC) around for the third round, (2SC, 1 SC, 1 SC) for the fourth round and then (2 SC, 1 SC, 1 SC, 1 SC) for the fifth and final round. (And by rounds, I really mean rounds-ish, because I wasn’t keeping exact track and there was a lot of winging it going on.) Mainly my goal was to end up with a circle that was about 2.25″ in diameter. A couple were up to 2.5″, but they’ll be fine.
Slip stitched to finish at the end of the final round, wove in both ends. Then I cut a piece of yarn maybe 18″ (ish) and wove that around the outer edge of the circles, kind of within the stitches of the last round, and then pulled the ends to make them even. To put them on the knobs, she’ll pull them gently to make the circle poof together, put it over the knob, then tighten the two ends of the strings and tie them off however she wants to.
I did have the thought after I was done that I could thread elastic thread through the outside and make it stretchy, so they’d be able to come off easier if they needed washed or something, but honestly, at that point, I’ll just make new ones this time around. Maybe elastic will be a thing on the next set, if there is one.
