Needles: US 4

Pattern: Halloween Party Cowl by Stephanie Lotven (available on Ravlery and on the Tellybean Knits website)

Details:

I wanted to use a non-superwash yarn for this cowl since it’s colorwork, and when I did the MKAL in 2023 (I think?), I found the SW yarn to not have the greatest stitch definition. (I probably should have gone down a needle size though.)

I’ve had a ton of J&S 2-ply in my stash for years, and I thought it would be fun to use for this, especially since I didn’t want to do this in typical Halloween colors. I do not have a label for the blue (that I can find, anyway). And the 6th color was recommended to be a dark black/gray/brown, which I didn’t have any J&S that I really liked with the others, but I did have this skein of my retired Ridgetop in a dark gray and it should work really well with the J&S. (J&S was the inspiration yarn I had in mind when getting Ridgetop milled to begin with. It’s a little heavier, but it should still be comparable enough to work.)

Here are the starting grams for all six colors. The green is the only one that I might not have enough of, but that’s future Lisa problem:

Natural – 26 gm
Green – 19 gm
Purple – 23 gm
Yellow – 25 gm
Blue – 22 gm
Dark Gray – 54 gm

10/9 – Not loving this motif, not only because full body skellies aren’t really my thing (it’s a Halloween-themed cowl, yes, I know), but also because when I look at it in person, the contrast between my two colors is not great. On camera it’s much bolder, which explains why my photo in b&w said the contrast would work…it lied. 😥 I’m trying to decide if I want to force my way through the rest of the Day 6 chart and just accept that it’s not going to look great in person, or do I want to rip it out and do this section in stripes of the two colors instead. I’d be fine with that. Looking at the charts for Days 7-9, I think those should work up ok contrast-wise. The Day 8-9 one is def overtly Halloween-y, but in my colors, it might not come off as such, which is fine.

11/5 – For the record, I decided not to finish this and will be frogging it to recoup the yarn. When it comes to MKALs, you win some and you lose some. 😉
