Handspun Granny Squares

For our Canada trip (or at least for the ride up and back), I took along a small project bag of little handspun skeins (mostly ones that were probably leftovers at the ends of bobbins and didn’t make it into the main skeins), with no real plan for them. Also, I took along a variety of hooks.

Having finished my Granny Square Obsession on the way to Canada, I decided to play with these handspun minis on the way home. I landed on making granny squares that start out round and then get squared off. I’ve never done this before and didn’t have a pattern, but I figured it out and they didn’t look bad, so I’m pretty happy with that. (After I was home, a friend sent me a link to a pattern for them, and as far as I can see, I’m pretty much doing the same thing as the pattern, so yay!)

I don’t have a plan for these, though they might become a table topper for the big end table in my office/Emma’s room, since she’s moving out and I assume will be taking the moon quilt topper I made for her (though she’s not getting the table! LOL)

7/23 – I laid the 21 squares I have finished out on the end table I want to make a topper for, and while I think they’ll fit nice (with an additional 21), I’m not 100% sure it’s going to be what I really want for that table. Not as flat as I’d like. I’m thinking I might want to weave something instead. But the blocks might instead become part of a wrap!

11/19 – So this project got moved to hibernating in early Sept. when the PSP started, but then I ended up pulling it back out a couple of weeks ago when I wanted something easy to work on and was over my PSP point obsession.

At that point, I had 36 squares, and I though ok, that’s enough to make a square item, or if I did 4×9, a longer mat. I also decided to put an edge on all of the squares for some cohesion. At first I did just a SC edge around it, but that was pretty dense and made the edges stiff. So I settled on doing just one last round of the 3DC clusters, and I liked that a lot more. The yarn I chose was a skein of handspun that I don’t have a label for so I do not remember what fiber it was (though I think it was something I dyed). I’d previously wound it up for the Cerce hat, but that didn’t look good in this yarn, but it worked great for these squares!

I did all of the final rounds on all of the squares (re-using the yarn I’d originally SCed on some of the squares, which was good or else I’d have run out) and then had to decide how to join. I ended up choosing to just sew them together with a tapestry needle, going back and forth between two squares picking up the outer leg of the edge stitch. I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

Then I decided I wanted an outer edge to bring it all together, so I did one big round of 3DC clusters. I literally had 2 yards left when I was done, so, whew!

I love how it looks. I have no idea where I’ll use it, but it was a fun project and used a lot of little bits of handspun. It’s currently soaking, so I’ll get final measurements and pictures later.
